Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012) Review

To start do you remember the first film in 1997 which was super violent and fun to watch with great lines and visuals which was a signature of Paul Verhoeven’s work, then there was a sequel and it was terrible and then a 3rd film came out and was a little better but still really bad. Well basically this film is what the other films should have been about and I found myself really enjoying the action of this film and its general story which was actually pretty good and worked well in the Starship Troopers universe.

The troopers of two starships have joined forces to terminate a massive bug attack at a federation outpost. Before the mission can be completed and the survivors evacuated, one ship abruptly departs and goes inexplicably dark. The remaining battle-hardened troopers race to the rescue, only to discover that the threat from the bugs is about to hit home. With the latest in CGI technology, this film from executive Producer Casper Van Dien and Director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) features the return of fan favorite characters Johnny Rico, Captain Ibanez and Carl Jenkins.

The advice I would give to readers is, Remember what you liked from the first film and you will probably find it somewhere in this film. Tim’s Film Reviews: Don’t pay but try to watch if you can.

To start off let’s talk about the acting. It’s animated so I am not sure there is much to say on this films acting because it seems more like a really long video game cut out scene.  However I did really like the characters and found it fun to watch their stories unfold and if you find yourself wanting to know what happens next to a character somebody is doing something right. I did like the inclusion of the original cast characters being involved in this film even if the cast aren’t the voices the same  characters of Rico, Carmen and Jenkins where still there and even ended on the same line which I enjoyed. Just like the rest of the films this has a lot of gore and violence and nude scenes in showers (yes it has those scenes).

Now then the visuals were clearly the winner in this film as well as the whole plot. The effects were very good and had some great visuals of tech and clearly required some concept ideas as this film introduces a lot more tech than the original films. The ships do a great deal more in this with it being an animated film it doesn’t hindering the budget like a live action film would have, this meant you actually seeing trooper ships firing on each other and an actual space battle. I think that a way to improve this film would be to include the satirical TV shows and some more extreme characters that made the first film so iconic, only things really missing from this as an animated film that could be improved as to make it close to the original it would need to be live action. But this film has some of the flare of the 1997 and plenty of action.

The best review I found would be either “Bloody Awesome Some of the best CGI characters I have ever seen Story great, lots of Action Starship Troopers fans will love it but it’s worth buying for your collection.” John O’Sullivan. This review Is from a fan rather than a critic and I like to agree with him for the most part. Or “While it’s certainly not going to take home any Oscars, ST: Invasion does a solid job of combing elements from both the original novel and the live action movies. Just turn off your brain for a while then grab some popcorn and sit back to watch the troopers kill some bugs.” Blake Sint. Yeah kill them all! My favourite scene would have to be when Rico goes in for his last stand at the end of the film because it was very hero type stuff and really fun to watch.

Good write up, Tim. I just watched it and it surely attempted, successfully imo, to capture the mood, style and fun of the first movie. It had loads of gore, action and nudity which is a great tri-fecta. Thanks!
