After Earth (Trailer #1) Review

Since I am now doing these trailer reviews I thought that I should probably do one of a trailer I didn’t particularly like. My view isn’t that the trailer is particularly bad but something about it puts me off and I’ll explain why. I like Will Smith and I don’t mind his son either, they can work together very well and I hope they can do so again. However these are my complaints, one being that the trailer seems to clash a great deal with Oblivion which I think looks better, me and my friends keep confusing the two and as they are coming out the same year this could prove annoying. Two, a lot of the scenes feel like I have seen it before, a lot of avatar feel to some of the scenes. Three, I don’t like M. Night Shyamalan recently but even worse is that they didn’t include his name anywhere in this trailer meaning the studio probably doesn’t have as much faith in him as they used to. On the other hand I did like the weird accent Will Smith was putting on, almost sounds like an accent of the future (Not from any distinct region). I also thought the visuals looked pretty impressive.

After Earth - Banner

Score: C

Top 3 Scenes

3. Beautiful Forests

After Earth - Beautiful Forests

If nothing else this film is going to deliver some very impressive visuals, this visual shot looks great but I can imagine more being very impressive with many space, forest, mountains, spaceships and weird creatures hunting the Smiths. It’s a little difficult getting these stills for some reason. Every time I paused the video it went a little blurry.

2. Aliens or Different Faction Attacking a Settlement

After Earth - Aliens attacking a Settlement

I automatically figured that this was on the planet and it was attacking the Smiths, but after closer looks I noticed that there were a lot of people there including a few carrying children. My view now is that its an alien attack or another human faction attacking  a settlement. The reason this is so and why it is important to the story is that Will Smiths character is a famous general. The reason I like this is because we may get a space battle! Probably not knowing M.Night but I can still hope.

1. Father and Son Breathing Exercise

After Earth - Father and Son Breathing Exercise

Personally I think that the best aspect of this film is going to be the father and son relationship. Being stranded on a dangerous planet and really needing each other to survive should bring some fantastic performances from both the stars. This personal relationship is something I think M.Night can actually pull off as he has done it before and as the main story playing within the film he can put most of his concentration on that.

After Earth - Poster

Lastly I believe this is M.Nights last chance and if he can’t pull this relatively simple story off then I am never watching another of his films. You can hold me to that.

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?

I have full faith in M. Night Shyamalan, because I think he’s made some phenomenal films in his career. Some are not very good yes, but his first 4 were masterpieces. I think he can get back to that quality with After Earth, and give us another Incredible, unforgettable Score by James Newton Howard, who never produces a bad score for Shyamalan.

Nice trailer review here Tim. I love them. umm, this trailer has me feeling mixed as well for a lot of the things you pointed out. (nice job grabbing the stills btw).

I just remain hopeful that this one works out for all involved. I like the idea of the accent from the future.

Glad you liked the review, less so the trailer 😀
Well I am pretty good at picking out dialects but I cant really tell what his is in this trailer, Interesting to see if my theory is correct, dont normally get that much detail in Sci-Fi films 😀

Hi Tim! I actually don’t care for this trailer at all. I’m so so about Will Smith but he seems to want to make his son into a star so desperately that it puts me off. This looks like a generic sci-fi, too. Pass.

Instead of mentioning his name, they probably said something like

‘From the guy that made that really cool movie about the kid that can see ghosts. You remember that one, right? it starred Bruce Willis and had a twist ending? You remember now? Good, Because he made this one, too.

It’s what I would have said.

    The trailer looks lame.
