Jack Reacher (2012) Review
Tom Cruise playing a character described as 6’5” in the book thought it might be a comedy, turns out it was actually a good action thriller. Tom cruise is a crazy crazy man but he is a good actor and plays this part surprisingly well. Loved the story and might start reading the books, if anyone would like to recommend their favourite in the comments that would be fine. This film had some interesting filming techniques that I will discuss later, the car chase specifically. Loved some of the dialogue, so easy to remember and really worked well in the film, when it was dark and serious people in the audience shut up, when it making a joke everyone laughed. The part where he walks out of the car and into a crowd doesn’t make sense but was so funny I liked it. This is a shockingly good action thriller that I would really recommend for some fun watching.
Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me. And sure enough, ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter-a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right-and soon the slam-dunk case explodes. Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning-and then beat him shot for shot.

To start off let’s talk about the acting. The acting was very good for the most part except for one thing that just got to me throughout the film, Rosemund Pike seemed to over act nearly every scene but mainly the ones were the reactions of shock, seriously her character appeared to be shocked by everything. The main character Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) was really top notch for portraying a character so different than his own personality and physical appearance (This is called acting, haters). On the subject of the clear differences in the characters appearance, personally it didn’t bother me as I can think of his height and size to be more symbolic of the character, like how he owns the room and doesn’t fear others but instils fear. Some critics have complained about cruise going in cruise control with this role but personally I think it’s simply the character he playing and I thought it was interesting. Apparently there will be sequels if it does well and I would quite like see those sequels. On a side note what’s with the groin attacks? His finishing move did seem to be a viscous attack on a man’s dangly parts.
So let’s talk about something more fun like the visuals. General visuals are very good and are smartly put together, the guns, the sets, the chases, all very good. The best thing I thought about this film’s visuals was the car chase in middle of the film; apart from the comedy and fast paced nature of the scene it was also demonstrating a great view point throughout the chase. Probably need to explain that, the shots looked like the camera guy had jumped onto the hood of the cars and the roof and then in the back seat, the effect this gave was a realistic persons view of the whole chase which really sucks you into the action and genuinely tricks you into feeling like you were there. The action of the film was really clever, quick and consistent throughout the films 130 minutes, quite rare in films of any genre. I had to look that run time up because it really didn’t feel very long.
The film works well because it knows what it is; even the actors know what they are doing. What I feel attributes to this is the approval given by Lee Child the author of the book series. I think his words as to why the film works are really important. Child said, “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way. With another actor you might get 100% of the height but only 90% of Reacher. With Tom, you’ll get 100% of Reacher with 90% of the height.” Trivia news for you film nerds, Tom Cruise actually did every stunt even the stunt driving was him, that’s pretty cool I must say for an actor. The only thing that made me sad was how its opening scene plays out like so many of the recent shootings in America and its cold nature was realistic but still so soon after.
Must Watch Trailer:
The best reviews I found would be these “Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise deliver on their promise, with a witty, violent take on Reacher that makes up for its lack of height with an abundance of smarts and thrills.” Mark Dinning. Very true and cruises personality makes up for any shortfalls in his height. Plus we have “The acting is very strong in this film and the action scenes are handled well. The story is fairly standard, but the characters are not, particularly Reacher, who is very mysterious and interesting.” Robert Roten. I really liked the character and would love to see more of him in some sequels. Lastly this one just makes me laugh “I know I’m not the only one who appreciates a lack of ambiguity when watching a dude get his testicles crushed.” Pete Vonder Haar. True. My favourite scene would have to be the car chase, the chase itself but also the way it ends is still making me laugh.
