White House Down (Trailer #1) Review

Roland Emmerich loves a good disaster film and granted this film is more action thriller he still gets a big budget and to set fire to the White House so I am pretty sure he is happy. The trailer has this fantastic start with a lot of things going on. We seem to get the initial attack shown through a news report which looks very dramatic. But we also get this fantastic quote from Lincoln which suggests an inner struggle within the film, a lot to take in for 50 seconds. The sounds and music is very harsh throughout the trailer and for me it really works to bring a tense feeling to the events portrayed. It’s almost like a teaser trailer in that I don’t really know what’s going on, but I like that and really want to see this film.

My Score: A

Plot:

Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

Top 5 Scenes

5. First look at Channing Tatum and Proud of Roland Emmerich

You may ask why I included both the Director Credit and Channing Tatum; well I simply thought I could kill two birds with one stone. Tatum looks great, suited up and packing heat. I do wonder why he seems to be the only hope in this trailer. Plenty of people running round but whatever I am sure they will explain it in the film. This film is super proud of Roland Emmerich and in this scene it just credits all his recent films with boom noise after each one. I like this because in the M Night film After Earth his name is never mentioned in the trailer (ahahaha).

4. Air Force One Going Down

Air Force One is so iconic of the American president that its quite shocking to see it taken down within the first few scenes of this trailer. The CGI looks fantastic and it being part of this TV report which the film starts with is working for me. Obviously the president isn’t on the plane which either means they’re taking out other Washington officials or they aren’t taking any chances if the president might have been on the plane. Brought to you by Tim’s mind.

3. Why Is This Hacker So Happy?

Wave your hands in the air like you just don’t care. Seriously though why is he so happy? What was at 84% on that monitor? What the hell is the cause of all the chaos in this film? I have no idea but I would like to have some theories posted at the end. Lincoln’s quote and the tagline ‘Our Darkest Secrets’ does bring some ideas to mind.

2. Channing Tatum’s Best McClane Impression

On a walkie talkie, bloodied, dirty and only wearing a vest. That’s John McClane and in the poster it looks like a Die Hard reboot which might I add looks damn good. Why is he on his own?! What possible excuse is there for only one man to save the president? There must thousands of secret service agents around the white house. Oh what if a department of defence secretary is committing a coup and Tatum is the only one on his side. Probably not but it’s fun to theorise.

1. The White House Is On Fire!

white-house-down-white-house-on-fire

Roland Emmerich seriously loves to show monuments BURN! He must be on some CIA list somewhere because he has some graphic and detailed visions of how to destroy these places. I actually love this shot because it goes out of that TV report view and becomes super clear as it zooms closer. We also get a few more places on fire than just the white house suggesting a lot of action all over the place. Can’t wait to see it and find out what the hell is going on.

This director has a dodgy track record and his last few films haven’t been the jolliest of experiences I’ve had in the cinema. However this film does look interesting, and not exactly the massive over-the-top end of the world kind of things. Here’s hoping for something decent yo.

Nice review here Tim. I tend to agree with you. I liked this trailer a lot (to my surprise), and, while I did think of John McClane, the trailer really does tease and make me want to see a bit more.

I hope that they actually do something completely different when it comes to the motivation and capability of the villain in this movie. We’ll see.

    great job here

The best way to promote a M night movie is to not mention him in the trailers haha. I never heard of White house down until now, probably see it on DVD. I heard there’s talk of not one but two sequels to Independence Day.

Ah, another quiet and sedate period drama by Mr. Emmerich. Count me in ;-).

Looking forward to it; not sure Tatum can carry this kind of movie on his own though so hopefully they’ll have a decent villain and lots of great explosions!

I saw Olympus has fallen last weekend and liked it a lot. Even if this mines the terrorist takeover with the unatticipated kick butt good guy to save the day it looks awesome. Enough room for both films.

In Independence Day Emmerich shot three helicopters out of the sky. in Godzilla he knocked three helicopters out of the sky; in The Day After Tomorrow he froze three helicopters out of the sky. It sucks to be three helicopters in a Roland Emmerich movie.

I like the concept, and I like the premise, but I don’t like Emmerich, Tatum, or heavy use of CGI implied by the trailer. I wanna like this film, but I just get the feeling that this is simply gonna be yet another bad Emmerich disaster movie. Again.
