Man of Steel (Trailer #3) Review

First thoughts after watching this trailer was that the 14th June is far too long a wait. Anyway this trailer didn’t waste any time, opening with a battle on Krypton, which couldn’t have looked cooler unless I saw it on an IMAX screen. On my previous review of trailer #2 I totally called Hans Zimmer’s score to be used on the 3rd trailer and it was and it’s brilliant! It’s got Zimmer’s usual sound but a bit more upbeat to match with what the films theme of superman seems to be. The scene as he takes off just gives me goose bumps. Notice how I haven’t talked much about the EPIC stuff going on in this trailer? That’s because I’ll be talking about them all in the top scenes section, which may have a few blurry images due to breakneck speed of the action. Now the wait begins to see the Man of Steel kick all kinds of ass. Oh God it looks so good! I expect comments of praise from all of you.

My Score: A

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Top 8 Scenes

8. You Are My Son

So I’ll start with a sappy one, Jonathan Kent embracing Clark after fearing his true origins. After Clarks real origins are revealed to him he asks his adopted father if he could keep pretending he was his son. It’s really sweet and hopefully of the same emotion integrity to be found throughout the film so as to keep the Man of Steel grounded as we have heard.

7. Krypton Battle

This is how you open a trailer! Giant alien battles with alien weapons and ships, ALIENS!!! Jor-El looks concerned and whilst these are pure guesses, Krypton may die from a civil? I just can’t tell because in the comics there was a civil war but it was before Jor-El’s birth. I imagine they have made a new one to fit their story as General Zod clearly opposes Jor-El in some way or another. Should be fun and I’ll be expecting some kind of new cannon to the Superman story.

6. Superman’s Take Off ft. Zimmer

The take-off seems so powerful and to me almost looks like one of those brilliant shots off a cartoon that very rarely gets truly captured by live action, but Zack Snyder knows his visuals and I loved them in this trailer. However there’s an added bonus to this trailers version, Hans Zimmer’s score has been used and goes into epic mode as he takes off and I love it.

5. Fortress of Solitude

I think it must be the fortress, changed a bit I’ll say that. Buried into a mountain and all alien ship rather than the crystal palace featured in most iteration of superman’s man cave. On the other side of this still, does superman look like he is about to tell someone to get off his lawn? Oh who cares he looks so damn cool.

4. A Hero Above Men

Is he flipping them off under the cape? Probably not. Either he is about to be arrested by the military or is being released, but based on the amount of tanks and guns pointed at him I would guess he is getting escorted to a secure location. Something about it seems clever as the story is supposed to be how the modern world would react to a Kryptonian, and well guns and tanks seem to be the go to with super powered aliens.

3. Lois Lane Interviews a Superman

I can imagine this being one those scenes where humour is played with in a nolanesque way. If you saw the dark knight series you get what I mean. Also the first time we have seen Lois Lane doing her thing as a journalist, seems pretty good but too little to really tell. Quite like to think about the scene being entirely in Kal-El’s control. Hand cuffs might as well be made of spaghetti and the one way mirror is laughable as he has X-Ray vision.

2. Superman Dodging Bullets

An unusual position for superman to find himself but actually it makes sense. It allows a fight scene to feel more threatening and thrilling because it feels like he could be hurt if he doesn’t avoid it, unlike for example the mini gun scene in Superman Returns which is incredible boring in repeat viewing. Still the scene looked fantastic as he moved so fast with a strength that just has never felt as present in other adaptations. Sorry for the blur, it was so damn fast!

1. General Zod Vows Revenge on Jor-El

We finally hear Zod speak and he is pissed off. “I will find him!” Michael Shannon will do this character justice and I cannot wait to see him and our man of steel duke it out. Interesting that this maybe the reason he has come to earth so as to take revenge on Jor-El for some undisclosed reason, something to do with a war I am guessing as Jor-El imprisons him and his men/women. In the still there we can clearly see Zod but also his men based on the presence of Faora Zods right hand man, who will be played by Antje Traue (Pandorum).

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?

It looks like they finally got around to making a bad-ass Superman film! Nice to see that he won’t be the boyscout “truth, justice & the American way” hero always portrayed in the past. Besides, Reeve played that version too well for anyone to fill those shoes. I think Superman fans are finally gonna get the cutting edge, action packed, modern film they have been waiting for…Can’t wait!
