Man of Steel (Trailer #3) Review

First thoughts after watching this trailer was that the 14th June is far too long a wait. Anyway this trailer didn’t waste any time, opening with a battle on Krypton, which couldn’t have looked cooler unless I saw it on an IMAX screen. On my previous review of trailer #2 I totally called Hans Zimmer’s score to be used on the 3rd trailer and it was and it’s brilliant! It’s got Zimmer’s usual sound but a bit more upbeat to match with what the films theme of superman seems to be. The scene as he takes off just gives me goose bumps. Notice how I haven’t talked much about the EPIC stuff going on in this trailer? That’s because I’ll be talking about them all in the top scenes section, which may have a few blurry images due to breakneck speed of the action. Now the wait begins to see the Man of Steel kick all kinds of ass. Oh God it looks so good! I expect comments of praise from all of you.

My Score: A

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Top 8 Scenes

8. You Are My Son

So I’ll start with a sappy one, Jonathan Kent embracing Clark after fearing his true origins. After Clarks real origins are revealed to him he asks his adopted father if he could keep pretending he was his son. It’s really sweet and hopefully of the same emotion integrity to be found throughout the film so as to keep the Man of Steel grounded as we have heard.

7. Krypton Battle

This is how you open a trailer! Giant alien battles with alien weapons and ships, ALIENS!!! Jor-El looks concerned and whilst these are pure guesses, Krypton may die from a civil? I just can’t tell because in the comics there was a civil war but it was before Jor-El’s birth. I imagine they have made a new one to fit their story as General Zod clearly opposes Jor-El in some way or another. Should be fun and I’ll be expecting some kind of new cannon to the Superman story.

6. Superman’s Take Off ft. Zimmer

The take-off seems so powerful and to me almost looks like one of those brilliant shots off a cartoon that very rarely gets truly captured by live action, but Zack Snyder knows his visuals and I loved them in this trailer. However there’s an added bonus to this trailers version, Hans Zimmer’s score has been used and goes into epic mode as he takes off and I love it.

5. Fortress of Solitude

I think it must be the fortress, changed a bit I’ll say that. Buried into a mountain and all alien ship rather than the crystal palace featured in most iteration of superman’s man cave. On the other side of this still, does superman look like he is about to tell someone to get off his lawn? Oh who cares he looks so damn cool.

4. A Hero Above Men

Is he flipping them off under the cape? Probably not. Either he is about to be arrested by the military or is being released, but based on the amount of tanks and guns pointed at him I would guess he is getting escorted to a secure location. Something about it seems clever as the story is supposed to be how the modern world would react to a Kryptonian, and well guns and tanks seem to be the go to with super powered aliens.

3. Lois Lane Interviews a Superman

I can imagine this being one those scenes where humour is played with in a nolanesque way. If you saw the dark knight series you get what I mean. Also the first time we have seen Lois Lane doing her thing as a journalist, seems pretty good but too little to really tell. Quite like to think about the scene being entirely in Kal-El’s control. Hand cuffs might as well be made of spaghetti and the one way mirror is laughable as he has X-Ray vision.

2. Superman Dodging Bullets

An unusual position for superman to find himself but actually it makes sense. It allows a fight scene to feel more threatening and thrilling because it feels like he could be hurt if he doesn’t avoid it, unlike for example the mini gun scene in Superman Returns which is incredible boring in repeat viewing. Still the scene looked fantastic as he moved so fast with a strength that just has never felt as present in other adaptations. Sorry for the blur, it was so damn fast!

1. General Zod Vows Revenge on Jor-El

We finally hear Zod speak and he is pissed off. “I will find him!” Michael Shannon will do this character justice and I cannot wait to see him and our man of steel duke it out. Interesting that this maybe the reason he has come to earth so as to take revenge on Jor-El for some undisclosed reason, something to do with a war I am guessing as Jor-El imprisons him and his men/women. In the still there we can clearly see Zod but also his men based on the presence of Faora Zods right hand man, who will be played by Antje Traue (Pandorum).

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?

  1. Underrated Movies says :

I’m on the fence about this movie. I don’t really like Zach Snyder and his shaky-camera-syndrome. But this trailer has changed my mind a bit.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Hmm interesting complaint about Snyder, I normally hear slo-mo and complicated stories. I don’t personally mind the way Snyder uses hand held’s because its used in slow scenes, and then its fixed for fast paced action. Unlike bay who insists on using it in fight scenes so I cant see what the hell is going on.

I understand how it can get to people, but that trailer looks glorious 😀

Most anticipated film of the summer?

      • Underrated Movies says :

Yes, I would say it’s the most anticipated. I can’t think of any others that I’m particularly excited about. I was going to say Scorsese’s movie — Wolf of Wall Street (?) — as my choice, but I’ve seen it’s been pushed back to November.

        • Tim The Film Guy says :

Wolf of Wall Street. Haven’t even heard of that but yeah Man of Steel!

          Oh what about Pacific Rim?

          • Underrated Movies says :

I like the director, Del Toro, especially his underrated movie “Mimic,” but judging by the trailer that one seems to be a “special effects overload,” and that’s coming from someone (me) who loves special effects. It looks like one of those that, when you’re watching it, you’re not really disliking it, but you do start to look at your watch and wonder how much longer this is going to take.

          • Tim The Film Guy says :

I love that guy, deserves an award 😀

Can’t have too many special effects but you can have too little imagination to create meaningful ones 😀

  2. Jules M. says :

Michael Shannon will be a tremendous villain, of that I have no doubt. This is one of the most promising trailers I’ve seen in quite some time.

  3. Last Road Reviews says :

Really mixed on this. I grew up with the Chris Reeve, Golly Lois, Superman. A darker approach unsure. While it worked for Batman (even campy Batman there was always something dark about the character that could be explored). But unsure about Superman.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

It doesn’t look like it will be dark but it will be more serious and realistic, which is what I want. I loved Reeves films but I think we need a new take on the story 😀

It shows some humour and the music is much more upbeat than the dark knights, so I don’t think you will need to worry 😀

  4. Novroz says :

No favorite bit. I am not as eager as everyone else in blogosphere. I will watch it out of curiosity.

My most anticipated movie is not this one, I might the weirdest one in movie blogging for not anticipating Superman 😉 but I have other I am dying to see and hope to God it’ll be played in my coutry

  5. Novroz says :

I always enjoy reading your trailer review…it’s like you have seen the movie 😉

Hope it’ll be as good as everyone expected

  6. atothewr says :

Love this trailer. I have never been the biggest Superman fan, but this movie looks amazing. Can’t wait to see it.

  7. Rodney says :

Easily the best trailer of the year, and I have no doubt this’ll be one of the best films of the year. If not, at least top five.

  8. lukebbtt says :

I think it’s this or Star Trek for best film of the year.

  9. Hypersonic55 says :

Michael Shannon, badass. Nuff said. Haha. No but seriously this trailer is finally the one that actually makes me interested in watching this film. It looks hardcore, I just want to see Superman be a badass for once, looks like this is the film to do it. Nice analysis yo!

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

I would kneel to Shannon in that scene! Haha terrifying 😀

I just wanna see real super fights in a superman film and yeah I think we will get it in this 😀

Thanks man and for dropping by 😀

  10. Gene says :

I love how pumped you are about it, me too! I like that they featured a bit more of Amy Adams as Louis Lane, as well as a bit more action from Superman. Sooo hope this is good.

  11. Erik says :

Another bad-ass trailer!!! I have always been more of a Batman and Spiderman fan but this one looks absolutely fantastic.

  12. ruth says :

“I expect comments of praise from all of you.” Well you got it man! It’s absolutely smashing!! 😀

I agree w/ all your Top 8 scenes, I’m going mad waiting for this!! Not fond yet about the score though but I knew that Williams’ iconic one is impossible to top.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Yay! And you agree with me! And your as impatient as me!

Funny actually about the score because I wasnt sure about it the first time I watched it but after watching it something like 40 times whilst doing this review, it really grew on me and I think it will do the same to others 😀

I am just very happy that Zimmer went in a completely different direction than Williams original, respect 😀

      • ruth says :

I was intrigued when I heard Zimmer’s gonna do the score, I LOVE his work! But what I’ve heard here doesn’t wow me, yet. I mean, it just can’t hold a candle to Williams’ score which always gives me goosebumps even just listening to a few notes. I hope the final score in the movie is a bit better.

        • Tim The Film Guy says :

This was probably just a little teaser to fit with the trailer. However Zimmer is a subtle score man rather than a more theme based score like Williams, so will never be viewed as better. Will suit this new films theme of story telling I hope 😀

  13. thelastsongiheard says :

Hell yeah! My birthday is on the 9th… here’s my birthday treat to myself!! 😀

  14. keith7198 says :

Mighty fine trailer! Mighty fine! Woo Hoo!!!!!

  15. Chris says :

This movie’s definitely looking better and better with each new preview we get. 🙂

  16. leocravenauthor says :

Trying not to get my hopes up too high, but I can’t help it…Best movie of 2013, here we go!

  17. Issy R. says :

It’s going to be a great film, this trailer solidifies it. Can’t wait!
