Pacific Rim (Trailer #2) Review

This massive Wondercon trailer is one gigantic and beautiful scene after another. This film is really trying to beat the idea of giant scale into our minds and personally it’s working for me. I will be watching this film in IMAX, it will be the best film ever made and as God as my witness Del Toro will get an Oscar! On my previous review of Trailer #1 I confessed my ridiculous excitement for this film, and clearly this trailer doesn’t help, I might actually go crazy waiting for this! The thing you notice about the trailer is a lot more behind the scenes detail such as the command center and well just people in general, and we see Charlie day for the first time talking about understanding the enemy (he is a scientist). Then we go over a few scenes showing how the Jaegers work with mind melding and such. We also get an insight into how the war with the Kaiju has been going, but after that its 2,500 tonnes of awesome with lots and lots of battle scenes and Giant Robot action! 12th July save the date!

My Score: A

Release date: 12th July 2013

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Top 10 Scenes

10. Kaiju Wall

Didn’t notice this the first 30 times I viewed this but I just noticed that this scene shows the repair and construction of a wall to keep out the Kaiju threat, originally I thought it was just a factory. Noticing the sign to the left we also get a little background info, one the California coast is getting attacked by Kaiju and two for some reason people do not think it will ever be completed.

9. Dr. Newton Geizler

I like Charlie Day, I like this film and he WILL have great dialogue. If I see one more film that has the best dialogue in the trailer I will flip! So far there is very little dialogue shown in these trailers as most of the dialogue appears to be narrative to help the trailer describe the world of Pacific Rim. This is good as it spoils nothing, you hearing me Hollywood?! “2,500 Tonnes of awesome” will be the most quoted line in the weeks leading up to this film’s release.

8. The Jaeger Program

I really want to see a reasonable excuse as to why the world would build giant robots to fight off giant alien monsters. My guess would be that all other methods at our means failed and they turned to more extreme answers to the problem. They turned to a moth balled military project called Jaeger. Just my theory and this just looked cool.

7. Massive Robot Battles Underwater

The Jaegers start marching and then the bass drops and they go under the water (not singing under the sea) to what I can only imagine will be the most kick ass robot battles ever seen on the big screen. It looks so realistic (as much as any of this can) with the water and the movement and the lights interacting with the whole situation. Love it!

6. Humanity Fights Back!

Propaganda! Dear God I love propaganda and especially in science fiction films. The humans are finally starting to push the Kaiju threat back to their dimension and it’s all thanks to the Jaeger project. As featured in this still the Jaegers are being celebrated with a military parade, confetti, flags and men in uniform, the Jaegers truly are the heroes of humanity. For now!

5. Kaiju Start Winning

Oh no it looks like the Russian Jaeger is going to get ripped to pieces by some ravenous Kaiju. That scene is so epic! I think another Jaeger is running to go help but obviously doesn’t make it in time and this poor Jaeger get torn apart. Something about the Jaeger being so easily destroyed makes me feel like the threat is far more real and I hope this continues throughout the film.

4. Our Fallen Hero

In this scene another Jaeger has bit the big one but here we see a Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) staggering out of his fallen friend. My theory is that his co-pilot has died in this scene and a new pilot played by Rinko Kikuchi will need to train with Raleigh Becket to use the new Gypsy Danger built after this one was destroyed.

3. Saving a Young Girl From Monsters

Set against giant robots the Kaiju can be forgotten as giant monsters but when one claw of a massive Kaiju drags across the ground in front of a small girl the scale really pops out at you. I think it maybe the same child as in the first trailer but maybe they just look alike. Run little girl! Run for your life!

2. Fighting In Mid-Air

I had to look at this a few times but I think a flying Kaiju tried to get away and as this Jaeger stuck a giant blade into the monster they have both ended up in low orbit! I could be way off but based on what I see in that still it looks like the sun coming up of the horizon with the stars in the distance. I fi am right then this will be an amazing visual spectacle.

1. Take An Oil Tanker To The Face!

Every scene in this trailer just topped the last and well…you just can’t beat this. Gypsy Danger our favourite Jaeger brings it and it is an oil tanker to which he drags to a fight with a particularly aggressive Kaiju. Gypse Danger then lifts the Tanker and swings it like a sword at the naughty monster. Whilst I know the tanker would snap with those movements I couldn’t care less because it is the most kick ass thing I could imagine from a film like this. I want to see this film now!
