Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) Review

Star Trek Into Darkness has really up’d the game this summer. It’s going to take something truly epic to take Into Darkness off the top spot in my opinion, looking at you Man of Steel. The story is very good and benefits from the always brilliant plot driver revenge, someone’s really not happy. The acting was great had the same brilliant performances from the first film with the added bonus of Benedict Cumberbatch being full on badass! We also get some great dialogue going in this film, decided to not put a spoiler one in the first paragraph but it’s a great line anyway. Unlike Iron Man 3 you will quote this films villain. Science fiction wise this film gave logic a slight beating but nothing that would make stop and think what? The visuals are just spectacular and it’s the first film this year that I saw any reason to put a pair of 3D glasses on, also recommending full IMAX for this one. Bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

“Let me explain to you what’s going on here. You are a criminal! I watched you murder innocent men and women. I was authorized to end you! And the only reason you are still alive is because I am allowing it! So shut your mouth!”

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The story is great but a little difficult to discuss without spoiling anything so this might be a tad vague. The story had some fascinating turns and a lot of surprises, however your level of surprise maybe dependent on your predictive abilities. There are some great wow moments where the reaction is so that just happened. The acting is great; I loved all the returning cast and I thought the role of the villain was performed brilliantly by Cumberbatch. How easily Benedict can switch from charming to chilling to genuinely scary is impressive and is hands down my favourite character in this film. The dialogue was good and finally I have a film this year with some real juicy lines I can quote, surprisingly not just from the villain but still “I will walk over your cold corpses” is a pretty good one, feels like one I may accidentally say at a funeral.

When I said that logic took a slight beating its nothing major just something’s that are quite funny, for example a ship designed for space has the exact opposite design in terms of pressure as a submarine so the first scene does defy a bit of common sense, some other gravity things near the end but nothing shockingly stupid. The action is good and well-paced, you won’t feel bored and it will keep you invested in the characters hoping they survive. The films science fiction elements where interesting, we got to see more of earth and a little more politics than in the previous film, also got some new Klingon designs which are little strange but only because I have a set way they look in my head from watching the show. The style and sound of the film is just great and has kept mostly everything from the first and added more to it, got some more soundtracks and I think I remember bad guy theme music. On the themes of this film you see more Star Wars influences popping its head up in this film, Abram’s in prep?

The visuals are excellent and I have zero complaints. I thought the first films visuals where great but this will truly fool you into their Star Trek universe, you will feel like you are in the future earth, you will feel like you are on a strange new world and you will feel like Klingon planets are not great holiday destinations. In terms of visuals I would say this film is far more into its ground battles than many in space fighting with photon torpedoes but the ground fighting is astounding and Benedict kicks all kinds of ass in this film with phasers (pew, pew) and fists. My personal favourite in visual terms was that glorious battle ship that does appear slightly in one of the trailers, there’s a little bit of a fight that just looks amazing and well everything that follows is stunning in its perfection.

Seriously these are spoilers; you will hate yourself for looking. So yeah John Harrison is actually the big the bad the KHANNNNN!!! Loved it, he even screamed it haha so happy. As soon as benedict appeared in a trailer I knew it was Khan, I called that one so hard! On the Khan Storyline we got the self-sacrifice scene but with a twist, it’s Kirk behind the glass. With him dying I could have gone either way but I do like that he survived because it allowed for a hysterical tribble reference and the possibility of a third film. Really liked the few twists in this film because at one point I feared a villain not really being a villain rubbish which gets on my nerves a bit now, however Khan turned his true colours and crushes a man’s head like a grape fruit! I was fully scared of that Khan (not the face, please) well done Benedict for being a full on psychotic and deadly villain. And he lived so maybe a sequel with Star Treks biggest villain back for a little more revenge.

The best reviews I found would be these “A solid but infrequently spectacular addition to a rejuvenated franchise.” Adam Woodward. “In some sense, the title is misleading. Into Darkness is a blast, fun, funny, spectacular and exhilarating.” Ian Freer. “Ultimately, it’s a blockbuster that pretty much follows the story-telling arc of its compadres in the superhero world…yet Star Trek’s not just living well. It’s prospering.” Tim Evans. “As in the first film, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are an inspired pairing as Kirk and Spock, and their squabbling bromance provides Into Darkness’s breathlessly-paced adventure with a heart.” Paul Gallagher. “English actor Cumberbatch is strikingly malevolent as the villain here, but he’s matched by Quinto (who again almost out-Spocks Spock), Zoë Saldana’s Uhura, Simon Pegg’s near-OTT Scotty and even Pine, whose Kirk is tougher here than in the first flick.” David ‘Mad Dog’ Bradley. “Set your phaser to awesome. Star Trek Into Darkness is a thrilling, joyride of a film that will have diehard trekkies and neophytes alike beaming” Julian Roman.

My favourite scene would have to be when Khan jumps down and starting throwing around Klingons like they were nothing. The man was shooting them with phasers, incinerating them with some weird gun; he then starts throwing knives like an assassin and finally just begins to beat them up, Klingons, with bat’leths just getting their asses handed to them. Oh then of course Kirk tries to punch him in the face and it just doesn’t faze him at all.

Great review, my thoughts are pretty much the same as yours! 🙂 Loved it all around, thought Cumberbatch was all kinds of awesome. Definitely my favorite of the year so far!

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Thanks, you clearly have good taste 😀

      Favourite scene?

      • boxofficebuzzab says :

Aw, well thanks! 😉 It’s tough to pick my favorite scene, there were so many good ones! I liked all the Kirk/Spock banter throughout the film, and I also liked when Cumberbatch’s villain basically single-handedly destroys the Klingon patrol. My favorite of the more serious scenes was the Kirk/Spock moment at the end, where it mirrored the Wrath of Khan with a twist. I thought that was a nice moment between the characters.

Great film, it is going to be hard to top this film but there are still some films like Man of Steel or Pacific Rim that can take it. Good Review.

  3. Fogs' Movie Reviews says :

Nice review Tim. I’m a little less enthused than you are. Some of those details like the submarine design thing (LOL, nice one!) bothered me a little more than you, but I’d still have it in the low 90s. 😉 Very entertaining deep space action film 😀

  4. The Focused Filmographer says :

I agree with you here completely! Great film. a bit predictable, but def up’d what summer films are to be like! Fantastic review and score here.

and I liked it when Cumberbatch’s character was throwing down against the bad guys too!

Seriously…you have a better review than mine 😉 but at least I am spoiler free 😉

Anyway, yaaaaiii for this>> well done Benedict for being a full on psychotic and deadly villain. And he lived so maybe a sequel with Star Treks biggest villain back for a little more revenge.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Are you spoiler free? I saw you refer to Harrison as aka Khan Noonien Singh…hmm haha 😀

Benedict was stellar, played well in all areas and really bunked up for the role which can be really difficult for slender people.

I do love that he didn’t die, so we may get a resurgence in a sequel. I think the next one will either be the five year mission in deep space or the Klingon war, time will tell 😀

      • Novroz says :

Is that a spoiler? huahahaha I know nothing about his character even though I watched Star Trek series when I was young. I think that was spoiler only to those Star Trek fans 😉

Benny was ALWAYS stellar!! 😉 and that’s why I love him (if I haven’t found Cillian, he might have become my number one fav actor…too bad for him Cillian stole my hear first)
