Box Office Predictions (5-7th July) Results

Sorry about the late post guys, my Dad’s in hospital and so it’s going to be a little slower around my blog. Rest assured I’ll still be reviewing Pacific Rim sometime next week. Back to the weekend’s releases and I was pretty close, in that The Lone Ranger bombed and Despicable Me 2 did great. My numbers were off by $42M over the top ten. What I didn’t expect this weekend was strong returning box office numbers, carry on reading to see what I mean. Go watch some movies and let’s look at the breakdowns.

Returning Films

The Heat did great this weekend only dropping 36%, doing great ladies. Monsters University dropped 56% and as expected DM2 has stepped on its toes. World War Z seems to be a surprise win this summer adding nearly $20M this weekend. The real surprise for me was a film I didn’t even know about Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain made $10M so well done that film making quite a bit on a busy weekend.

New Films

Despicable Me 2

Analysis:

Despicable Me 2 might not have achieved the ridiculously high numbers I predicted you can’t complain about any numbers above Monsters University, so well done DM2. $83.5M is damn respectable.

The Lone Ranger

Analysis:

I had nothing but low expectations for this films weekend and yet it STILL crawled under my low bar prediction. MWAHAHAHA The Lone Ranger took in just $29.2M through Friday and Sunday, weak Disney very weak.

My Prediction

  1. Despicable Me 2:   -$110M
  2. The Lone Ranger:   -$35M
  3. Monsters University:   -$20M
  4. The Heat:   -$18M
  5. World War Z:   -$14M
  6. Man of Steel:   -$11M
  7. White House Down:   -$11M
  8. This is the End:   -$5M
  9. Now You See Me:  -$3M
  10. Fast & Furious 6:  -$1M

Actual Results

  1. Despicable Me 2:   -$83.5M (-26.5M)
  2. The Lone Ranger:   -$29.2M (-5.8M)
  3. The Heat:   -$18M (+6.7M)
  4. Monsters University:   -$19.7M (-0.3M)
  5. World War Z:   -$18.4M (+3.6M)
  6. White House Down:   -$13.4M (+2.4M)
  7. Man of Steel:   -$11.4M (+0.4M)
  8. Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain:   -$10M (N/A)
  9. This is the End:   -$5.8M (+0.8M)

My daughter was invited to a birthday party at the theater where they went to see Despicable me. The rest of us went and saw it too in the same theater. It was packed and not just the three rows of 9 year olds there for the party/movie.

No predictions for this weekend? Sounds like Despicable Me 2 is still gonna reign at the box office.

Sorry to hear about your dad, I hope he feels better soon! 😦

Good predictions. I anticipated Lone Ranger would be a flop, though I actually ended up really enjoying this one as a movie (I know I’m definitely in the minority, though).

Hahah looks like I was the winner kid last weekend 😉 Pacific Rim was pretty awesome, I predicted that one at $45M. A bit too high maybe, but the tracking says now it should end between $37 and $40 million. So not too shabby. Grown Ups 2 should end around $44M now, so I’m pretty f*cking pissed about that. I love early career Adam Sandler (with the exception of Airheads!) but now it just seems like he’s trying to make the worst movie ever. I predicted Grown Ups at $38.5M, so I guess I won’t have a terrible weekend for the new releases…

Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope all is well.

As far as the movie side goes, glad to see The Lone Ranger take a nose dive. I’m sure they are still cooking up a sequel. Maybe though, this will give studios a brief pause, probably won’t though.

I’m extremely pleased with World War Z’s performance. It even surpassed my expectations as the new breed of zombies is jettisoning this film into some cash territory.
