Box Office Predictions (19-21st July)

Guess what am back to…PREDICTIONS!!! But first I have to issue my deep disappointment of Pacific Rims box office last weekend. The US has let me down and hopefully the international markets can save this wonderful film. Also if you haven’t seen it yet please go out this weekend so you don’t have to witness another of my Dredd breakdowns! Grown Ups 2 are F*CKING kidding me! Onto less ranting topics let’s talk about the FOUR new wide releases this weekend. We have Turbo the animated racing film about snails, The Conjuring a new horror film with excellent reviews, R.I.P.D. a comic book adaptation of what is essential MIB with ghosts and lastly Red 2 the sequel to a successful action film about not so retired CIA agents. Look on for my analysis and go out to see some films. Please go see Pacific Rim! PLEASE!!!

Returning Films

Last weekend if you didn’t see Pacific Rim then I curse you, I put a curse on you ALL! Despicable Me 2 might take some beating from Turbo but I highly doubt it so am predicting $22M. Pacific Rim should do excellent with my multiple threats  over this weekend, however my threats don’t have the same impact when there not made in person so hopefully if the world is just it should make $19M. I don’t think I could take another weekend were Grown Ups 2 beat…well anything so I hope it takes a savage beating but I doubt it will so am predicting $19M.

New Films

The Conjuring

Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. “The Conjuring” tells the true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga), world renowned paranormal investigators, who were called to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most horrifying case of their lives.

It’s been a while since a horror film came out so am predicting Purge style earnings this weekend. However the height of summer is never a great time for horror films. It’s a 50/50 whether it will be big or bomb badly but I feel confident that this will do well especially with good reviews. My prediction is $36M.

A garden snail dreams of becoming the fastest snail in the world.

Not really sure what they were thinking with this film, it wasn’t cheap and the concept is totally weird, however if there is one genre of films this year doing well its animated kids films so it could surprise this weekend. The film has some left over competition from Monster University and Despicable Me 2. My prediction is $26M.

In RED 2, the high-octane action-comedy sequel to the worldwide sleeper hit, retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device.

I don’t really care about this at all but some do. The film should do similar numbers to the first film as it lost some of its stars but added some others. It’s a tough one to predict but similar numbers to the first film would be good considering the packed weekend. My prediction is $21M.

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.

Look at this film to do epically bad this weekend, the tracking is in the teens, the fan base is miniscule, the reviews are awful and the marketing has been non-existent. The studio knows it’s a bust and just want to let it come and go as quickly as possible. Looks pretty fun but I don’t care about either. My prediction is a dreadful $8M.

My Prediction

  1. The Conjuring:   -$36M
  2. Turbo:   -$26M
  3. Despicable Me 2:   -$22M
  4. RED 2:   -$21M
  5. Pacific Rim:   -$19M
  6. Grown Ups 2:   -$19M
  7. The Heat:   -$9M
  8. R.I.P.D:   -$8M
  9. The Lone Ranger:   -$6M
  10. Monsters University:   -$5M

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this weekend and its new releases?

Good predictions. I too think RIPD will be a crash and burn, and I am hoping that lots of people get out and see Pacific Rim this weekend. I think I will cry if Grown Ups 2 beats it again. 😉

  2. The Focused Filmographer says :

Everyone must go see Pacific Rim! EVERYONE! I think you’re right about The Conjuring winning

  3. Kim @ Tranquil Dreams says :

I don’t know about US or UK but The Conjuring opened the film fest here and it was all sold out! The lineup last night outside the theatre went all around the block…crazy stuff!I think you’ll be right on for that one!

  4. ruth says :

I think you’re right it’ll be between The Conjuring & Turbo. I think RED 2 might actually make it to the top 3, it was quite enjoyable. Silly good fun w/ the senior citizens, ahahaha.

  5. Gene says :

I’m with you on RIPD, big time bomb. But, I think Turbo will do better than expected. All that needs to be present are bright colors, animals talking and the veil of funny stuff and it will bring out the parents and kids in droves. I’d put it in the upper-40’s. But as you say, there is a lot out there.

  6. Margaret (@lady_sati) says :

I really hope The Conjuring does well. It looks amazing!

  7. williamjepma says :

Listen to this guy everyone, and GO SEE PACIFIC RIM!!! Okay, got that off my chest. 😉

I think these predictions are pretty accurate, but to be honest I think Turbo is going to do way better than it should. Just because it’s a kid’s movie. So yeah, just go watch Pacific Rim.

  8. Jack Flacco says :

You were right on the money with The Lone Ranger. R.I.P.D. should have gone straight to video. And in spite of Red 2’s marketing blitz, we may see the numbers come in as you’re predicting.
