Box Office Predictions (19-21st July) Results

Interesting weekend and one of my closest predictions to date, must be getting good. However Pacific Rim dropped more than 57% so expect a ridiculous hissy fit, am talking Dredd level fit. Grown Ups 2 $20M!!! Dafuq! But the four releases didn’t do to great considering the box office dropped compared to last year, sadly this could become more frequent if studios keep pushing more releases on the same weekend. I mean really four brand new films in one weekend which also has to compete with last weekend’s releases. Look on for my analysis and go out to see some films. Please go see Pacific Rim! PLEASE!!!

Returning Films

This weekend if you didn’t see Pacific Rim you may have noticed your penis fell off, well that was my curse muhahaahahaha. Despicable Me 2 did really well bringing in $25M which is only a 42% drop on last weekend and in its 3rd weekend that’s real impressive. Grown Ups 2 beat Pacific Rim by $4M I hope you’re all happy.

New Films

The Conjuring

Prediction-The-Conjuring

Analysis:

The big winner this weekend and of 2013 horror films in general is The Conjuring which scarred up a massive total of $41M and as a film that only cost $20M its way in the black and with good reviews and good word of mouth it should go on to make mega bucks.

Turbo

Prediction-Turbo

Analysis:

A rather massive disappointment for the studio as it cost a lot more than Despicable Me 2 but couldn’t even beat it in the box office after its third weekend. Still it’s nothing compared to the other Ryan Reynolds big budget failure this weekend haha wow. Racing Snails? Seriously.

RED 2

Prediction-RED-2

Analysis:

I didn’t get the logic of releasing this film in the summer but it’s their money. Another failure this weekend due to overcrowding and the fact that a group of old action stars isn’t as fresh as it was in 2010.

R.I.P.D.

Prediction-RIPD

Analysis:

And as I predicted a terribly weak showing. Granted it didn’t do as bad as I predicted but $12M is still terrible numbers. Ryan Reynolds seems to be poison this weekend.

My Prediction

  1. The Conjuring:   -$36M
  2. Turbo:   -$26M
  3. Despicable Me 2:   -$22M
  4. RED 2:   -$21M
  5. Pacific Rim:   -$19M
  6. Grown Ups 2:   -$19M
  7. The Heat:   -$9M
  8. R.I.P.D:   -$8M
  9. The Lone Ranger:   -$6M
  10. Monsters University:   -$5M

Actual Results

  1. The Conjuring:   -$41.5M (+5.5M)
  2. Despicable Me 2:   -$25M (+3M)
  3. Turbo:   -$21.5M (-4.5M)
  4. Grown Ups 2:   -$20M (+1M)
  5. RED 2:   -$18.5M (-2.5M)
  6. Pacific Rim:   -$16M (-3M)

The Conjuring is an excellent ghost flick, surprising because we’ve all seen haunted house films before. James Wan managed to make it exciting again! Just reviewed it, stop by and give a read 🙂
Reynolds should go back to romantic comedies (so I never have to see him act anymore) and Red 2??? there was a Red 1??? Old people action movies – I dont get it.

It’s incredible how much people love horror movies! Yeah I’m not surprised The Conjuring won. Reynolds career’s got to be teetering on the brink of collapse by now right, I mean double flop can’t be good, esp. when one of them is the usually-reliable animated flicks!

I think I’ve gotta go see The Conjuring! Great word of mouth from both users and critics, surprisingly.

Agree with you about the fact they keep releasing them all at once but I guess its just to roll over the competition, and my oh my Reynolds has flopped, conjuring to continue its reign 🙂
