Kick-Ass 2 (2013) Review

Kick-Ass 2 is a lot of fun and whilst it may not be as excellent as the first film it has its moments. It’s a little hard to describe this film in a review, when its good it’s really good and when it’s not it’s quite boring. The continuation worked quite well from the first film and the theme of real world superheroes was expanded to Justice Forever (loved that) with some new “heroes”. The characters aren’t as consistent or memorable as in the first film and there was little connection to the big deaths. I have more complaints and nit-picking so read on. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

“You don’t have to be a bad-ass to be a superhero. You just have to be brave.”

The costumed high-school hero Kick-Ass joins with a group of normal citizens who have been inspired to fight crime in costume. Meanwhile, the Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows.

The story is laid out weird, it kind of doesn’t have a star or end, the whole film feels like middle. This does happen to sequels sometimes, but considering this maybe the last one I’d have liked a nice good definitive ending. The acting was pretty terrible from most of the cast but Chloe Moretz did show her young talent even if her character wasn’t as strong as in the first film. Still not a fan of Aaron Johnson acting and Jim Carrey was barely in the film, had like 3 lines of dialogue. I have more to say but its spoiler territory so look out for the spoiler section.

On an action stand point it was great, had a lot of fun with the film. Hit Girl was kicking ass and anything involving Mother Russia was pure entertainment. The film also had some great kills and fun fight choreography equal to the first film. As a superhero film it didn’t really have too much of a point. I am not sure if its no point or too many superhero themes at work, do superheroes cause super villains? Belonging, Revenge, Justice. But my main point is how the film couldn’t choose between Hit Girl and Kick Ass to be the main character.  Films need focus to work and this film just couldn’t pick one story.

Kick-Ass 2

Seriously guys turn away now to avoid spoilers. Everybody who reads my reviews know I love a good few deaths in my film, however this film goes overboard with the significant kills. For example Javier is killed which is significant to Chris D’Amico, then Colonel Stars and Strips gets killed which is still big but being five minutes after Javier seems somewhat cheapened and then Dave’s dad is murdered and by this point I don’t care as much as I should, which is a shame. They didn’t kill the dog though and that’s a classy move, but why don’t we see the dog again, should have bitten someone’s fruit and berries off at the fight near the end. The only other thing that annoyed me was Hit Girl in high school and whilst it is a great preview to her in Carrie wasn’t the unstoppable Hit Girl from the first film that we all came to love. I did love the Incontinence weapon at the high school though, and she’s back!

Don’t forget my trailer review.

The best reviews I found would be these:

“Kick-Ass 2 is a lot of fun. It’s just about as awesome if not more so than the original, its violent, over-the-top, ridiculous, hilarious and doesn’t care about who it offends. I wasn’t expecting the film to be as good as it was but it exceeded my expectations and was a lot better than a lot of the films I’ve seen this summer.” Hyper Sonic. Full Review

“hough the first one added an extra feeling to its punch, Kick-Ass 2 still delivers on the action, the violence, the humor, and the fun turns from its cast, but also doesn’t know whether it wants to be a serious superhero movie with disturbing bits and pieces of violence thrown in it, or a comedic superhero movie, with disturbing bits and pieces of violence thrown in it.” Dan the Man’s Movie Reviews. Full Review

“Kick-Ass 2 is a kick-ass sequel to a kick-ass predecessor. It may have had pacing issues and a slight lack of originality but it still delivered as a film of pure entertainment. The humour and violence were still the same and was not any more or any less funny or gruesome than its predecessor.” Film Reviews & Lists Full Review

My favourite scene would have to be anything with Mother Russia and especially the scenes outside of Night Bitches house with the cops, it was like a zombie game, blowing up gas canisters, throwing lawn mowers through windows and ripping car doors off Arnold Schwarzenegger style.

Nice review. 🙂 Although I’ll be skipping it since I didn’t like the first one…

Your opening statements sum up what I felt after watching it. Had a tough time putting my thoughts together and thus avoided even writing a review. It DOES feel like the entire movie is a “middle”…good call. I liked seeing Jim Carrey in a more serious role (if you can call it that).

I’d say I agree with your score on this one. Nicely put.

Thanks, this was a hard one to review. The middle syndrome can happen to sequels but that’s no excuse for it happening. I wish we had more Jim Carrey because I felt like it was a very small part that only amounted to 3 minutes of screen time 😦

I’ll see it when it comes out on DVD. I loved the first one *gasp* even more than the comics!

  4. leocravenauthor says :

This one was just okay for me, but it did get me pumped about seeing Moretz in the upcoming “Carrie” re-make. I believe she’s got the acting chops to pull off the rare case where the re-make will be better than the original!

  5. John says :

Great review. Loved the film myself though not too sure about the variations away from the comics! Check out my review here if you like…

I think I’ll miss this one. I tried to like the first one but just couldn’t get into it. Although I love Jim Carrey but if you say he’s hardly in it I guess there’s no point seeing it just for him :/ xxx

  7. Mr Rumsey says :

A very fair review and rating Tim! I totally agree about the disconnected with the big deaths – such a shame. 😦

  8. sanclementejedi says :

Tim I am not sure what sort of puritanical stick in the mud types are hating on this film. Probably the same folks who hate dancing and kids wearing jeans and listening to the devil’s music. Is it as good as the original film? No but it is still a fun watch and a fairly accurate interpretation of the source material.

WOW!! I really love kick ass! this movie kicks!:)

  10. sidekickreviews says :

I haven’t watched this yet, but I liked Hit Girl in high school in the comics. She’s such a badass so it’s interesting to see her out of element, essentially a victim of bullying by these little bratty teen girls who she can destroy if she really wanted to. I hope Aaron J. doesn’t get the Avengers 2 role because I don’t think he can carry a movie much less a role.

  11. Victor De Leon says :

I just re-read the Kick Ass 2 books and I am looking forward to this one very much. The Kick Ass 3 books have just started and I hope they continue the films. Great write up! It sounds pretty much like what I hoped to expect from it. Thanks!

Good stuff, Tim! I liked this one a lot and loved some Night Bitch. I also loved the Sick Stick : ) I need one of those.

  13. CMrok93 says :

Nice review Tim. It’s okay if you like this type of bloody, self-knowing action and violence, however, the tone is very off and sort of threw me for a loop at times.

  14. Three Rows Back says :

Great read buddy. Have been looking forward to seeing this.
