10 Most Anticipated Films of 2014

This is my list of the most anticipated films released in the year 2014, wow this year, crept up quick. I have a skewed view towards the genres of Sci-fi and Action, so don’t expect indie or drama, I will watch them but at the moment I just don’t care. If you notice any films that you want to see more than anything then this could mean one of two things, either I disagree or I simply forgot it was coming out. If so I would love to know if I am missing any. Also there will be a box office prediction for each film; you guys know how much I like predictions. Upcoming reviews are all 2013 film, first Frozen then The Kings of Summer and You’re Next is ironically next.

#10:  Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I liked the first film but it wasn’t anything special and the sequel sounded interesting especially with that title (that’s right I read comics) Bucky! Gone to the dark side (sad face). But wow the trailer makes the film look great and I don’t really know that much more than I did before the trailer, which is good (few spoilers). The scope of the film looks pretty massive and after the Avengers that is really needed, whether this scale will help or hinder is too hard to tell but me like. Also listen out for that music because I think it’s part of the films score and its pretty good, its different than most of the marvel cinematic scores.

Box Office Prediction: $600M

#9:  Godzilla

I would place this much higher if I had more to go on, however we have next to no information past a vague synapsis and a very brief trailer. Granted the trailer had some cool atmosphere and that intro is glorious but again nothing to on other than it contains some cool actors and GODZILLA!!!

Box Office Prediction: $400M

#8:  The Raid 2: Berandal

I absolutely loved the first film, so bloody and raw. If the sequel expands on that by going outside of a tower building it should hopefully be amazing. The film could falter but I am purely optimistic about it and eagerly awaiting its explosive entry into cinemas.

Box Office Prediction: $60M

#7:  22 Jump Street

The first film was such a fantastic surprise as a comedy and the trailer puts my doubts to rest for the most part about a sequel. I mainly say that this doesn’t bother me because in the trailer they just don’t stop mocking the idea of this being a sequel. Ice Cube gets more time which is great and the duo seem to have hit their stride in the characters Jenko & Schmidt. I am definitely going to see and I hope you all see it too.

Box Office Prediction: $320M

#6:  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

How did they reboot Planet of the Apes in a serious way? Seriously the first film was great and this looks like my jam! Dystopian future, ape armies, dawns, Gary Oldman. We get the basic plot with no spoilers so I say this teaser trailer is fantastic. Bring on the film!

Box Office Prediction: $510M

#5:  Guardians of the Galaxy

Got nothing for this! This is the most out there on the list and it could end the best film ever made, the worst film ever made or just average. But the anticipation is killing me for some reason. I have it in my head that it will be star wars set in the marvel universe. Come on trailer

Box Office Prediction: $400M

[Trailer pending]

#4:  How To Train Your Dragon 2

How To Train Your Dragon 2 Teaser Poster

This is another film that I loved and am praying the sequel is equally good. The first was great and one of my favourite animated films of past 10 years. Loved the teaser trailer they released as well, but I love full length ones better. Didn’t really know where they’d take this sequel but the introduction of Hiccup’s mother and a new Viking threat has my attention. I am hoping for some epic fun from the DreamWorks team.

Box Office Prediction: $700M

#3:  The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Second film really impressed me and even made it to second place on my top ten films list of 2013, so of course the next film is highly anticipated. Now then the next book is a darker subject matter, you know full on revolutions get a little messy. Not sure how they will do it but I am excited to find out.

Box Office Prediction: $1,100M (Billion Dollar Club)

[Trailer Pending]

#2:  The Amazing Spider-Man 2

It’s looking very interesting and whilst I have no idea what the final product will deliver I am very interested in this film. Watched the trailer a few times now and my only thought is wow Sony is REALLY going for it! Insane amount of content in this film and there is a lot of stuff I like, and the usual worries I get. We see Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin or Hob Goblin? And easily my favourite scene showing the super tech for the sinister six. Sinister Six!

Box Office Prediction: $950M

#1:  The Hobbit: There and Back Again

Like the The Hunger Games 2013 brought another great sequel, I hope this last film finishes strong enough to be worthy of the last middle earth film. The part 2 left things hanging and if the part 3 is done correctly it will be amazing but if they drop the ball it will be an unmitigated disaster. Optimism!!!

Box Office Prediction: $1,300M (Billion Dollar Club)

Great list yo, can’t argue with any of those choices, all of which have the potential to be the best stuff ever.

If I were to give my list I’d rearrange some of those choices, it’d look something like this:

    1. Cap 2
    2. Guardians of the Galaxy
    3. Godzilla
    4. X-Men DOFP
    5. Amazing Spidey 2
    6. Dawn of the Apes
    7. The Hobbit Part 3
    8. The Raid 2
    9. Need For Speed
    10. Hunger Games Part 3

  2. atothewr says :

Great post, hadn’t seen a couple of those trailers, thanks for posting them.

  3. Dan says :

Captain America is one I’m looking forward to as well. I enjoyed the first one and see definite potential in the character. Likewise, Spider-Man will be great in my opinion, better than the first simply because it has the right components and set itself up really well in the previous film.

However, Interstellar is my most anticipated film of 2014. Christopher Nolan can do no wrong.

  4. Glittering-Diamonds says :

I so can’t wait for Godzilla and 22 Jump Street (although I have a feeling it won’t be as good as the first).

  5. williamjepma says :

Yeah, I can’t wait to see every single on of these (although I still need to get around to seeing the original Raid). 2014 is going to be another great year, I think. 🙂

  6. Beer Movie says :

Great list. A few of my most anticipated are on here as well. Hopefully it will be another cracking year of films.

  7. sidekickreviews says :

This is pure speculation but I think Marvel is still tweaking the looks of the characters in Guardians which may be why it’s taking so long to get a proper teaser trailer. That’s what happen when you have a racoon and a tree main characters. :p Like you said, that movie could be awesome, average or a complete bust. Let’s go with awesome shall we? I’d add Interstellar. I’m not super high on X-Men DOFP either but I’m going to watch it anyway.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

That cannot possibly be true, they are near the end of shooting. February onward’s will be post production work. Teaser trailer will most likely be released around late this month or early February. That Racoon and Tree will be hard sells, hope they have a strong marketing team 😀

If I had more to go on i’d add Interstellar, i have no doubt its going to be goo but its hard to knock off one of these films for a film with very little to go off.

If X men DOFP is an average film, and/or bombs at the box office I want it known that I called it. $250M budget with a franchise that has never seen north of $500M. Fox is a brave/stupid gambler.

  8. Chris says :

Can’t really disagree with any of these picks, Tim (though I would definitely change the arrangement, lol). Captain America and Dawn of the Apes are my most anticipated from your list, and the new X-Men would be up there as well, though I do recall you not being too sold by its trailer. 😉 But in any event, certainly some good looking movies on the horizon, I just hope that they deliver! 🙂

  9. caragale says :

Excellent list, Tim! I’m keeping my eye on a lot of the same ones. 😀

  10. Rincewind says :

Out of your list I’m shivering in anticipation for guardians of the galaxy . This could be just smashing awesome or awful… am prepared for the worst.

  11. daviruz says :

now u tempting me to write mine… Though i would add Transcendence and Interstellar (Christopher Nolan remember?)

  12. dawsonreviews says :

Great list, though I would say Transcendence is probably worth a look. And I’m really, really hoping that they don’t screw up Guardians of the Galaxy, it looks like one of Marvel’s more original ideas.

  13. Three Rows Back says :

I’d pop Interstellar on there as well, but those are 10 excellent picks.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

I’d have put Interstellar on the list but I don’t really have anything to go off. No details or images. A weird cocaine poster, and a teaser trailer that reminds me of the Star Trek Enterprise opener. I’ll have to wait and see 😀

Thanks, glad you liked the list 😀

  14. Genki Jason says :

The Godzilla trailer looks pretty good. I can remember going to the cinema to see the last Hollywood remake and being thoroughly disappointed with it so I hope this one’s much better.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

That is the hope, it looks like its on the opposite spectrum to action chessy, looks more drama thriller. Sounds great but I have my doubts about the director. Monsters his last and first film didn’t show anything and disappointed me 😦

      • Genki Jason says :

The trailer is really atmospheric and I’m quite lookng forward to it. I quite liked Monsters so I wonder if he can make characters we care about in this Godzilla. It has been a long time since I last saw Monsters so I wonder if I’d still feel the same about it.

  15. jjames36 says :

Personally, I’m not much looking forward to Spider Man 2 or The Hobbit, but the others . . . I agree.

Hopefully they’re as good as I hope they’ll be.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

      Stop disagreeing with me James!

Any personal favourites for next year? Am sure you have them in mind 😀

      • jjames36 says :

I’m most looking forward to Interstellar. But I also can’t wait for Captain America.

Or the others on your list, really.

        • Tim The Film Guy says :

I’d have put Interstellar on the list but I don’t really have anything to go off. No details or images. A weird cocaine poster, and a teaser trailer that reminds me of the Star Trek Enterprise opener. I’ll wait to see 😀

          • jjames36 says :

That’s fair. It sold me at McConaughey. His career resurrection over the last three plus years has turned me into something of a fan boy. 🙂

But you’re right that there isn’t empirical evidence supporting my excitement. 🙂

  16. myreelpov says :

    AGREED… That is all xx

  17. iheartfilmsgirl says :

Good choices. I’ve done my for Jan but not the year overall yet. It’s on the list. Main one for me 22 Jump Street – I just hope it’s as good as the first.

  18. Brian @ Hard Ticket to Home Video says :

I totally agree with your list except for the order and some of the movies on it.

  19. keith7198 says :

Some good mentions there. I’m a little lukewarm on the Spidey sequel. I want it to be good but I dunno. Captain America looks really good and its based on one of my favorite Cap story arcs. As for Godzilla, it could be a success but it could also be a box office bomb.

  20. lukebbtt says :

You missed Nymphomaniac, Tim. Thought you would already be queueing for that one, lol.
