Justice League: War (2014) Review
Didn’t think a DC animated film would be the first film of 2014 I would review but here we are. I got to admit this film is pretty great. Its action packed, funny, got a great voice cast, the story whilst simple works pretty well to assemble a Justice League and it’s filled with pretty good pop culture references. The visuals in this are great, with fights, powers and character designs all looking pretty cool. The characters are done brilliantly from Batman to Wonder Woman, the voicing and characters development is small if any but the establishment of who these characters where was done really well, you just get them. The film is out for VOD so I recommend checking it out.
Batman: “You bruise but you don’t kill do you…Clark?”
Superman: “You’ve made your point. Ha Bruce Wayne.”
Green Lantern: “Who the hell is Bruce Wayne?”
Based on the graphic novel by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, seven heroes must band together for the first time to stop an alien invasion.

The story had to build all of the characters in 75 minutes, most two hour films struggle to establish comic characters. I don’t see any future live action films establishing Cyborg as well as this does, he was done pretty damn well. Simple and short would be my only complaint but come on it’s a straight to video animated film, what do you expect. The voice acting was done by some great people who really worked well with the characters; Darkseid was a little ridiculous but the heroes had great voices and hysterical dialogue. So many funny lines I could quote in this film, got a great one at the end of the review.
The action was pretty great, with the majority of the film essentially a war against Darkseid and Apokolips, and everybody’s powers are shown off pretty well except maybe Batman and Superman who I suspect where put slightly on the side lines to establish the others who are less known. The animation and visuals where really well done, powers all looked cool and characters looked great using them. The moving of Shazam for Aquaman makes sense as Shazam fits in this story better and as the teaser at the end suggests we will get a sequel with gills so don’t you worry Aquaman fans.
The best reviews I found would be these:
“I’m glad these recent DC Animated movies are in good hands and that they are being done with care and respect. Oh, and I must give kudos to the voice cast. They all shine here and I was impressed by how well the dialog flowed between the characters. Oliva, Corson and cast all do remarkable work in this DC movie and I hope they keep up the great work. Recommended!” Vic’s Movie Den. Full Review
“A strong showing out of the gate as the DC animated universe begins to line up with the current DC comic book universe. JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR presented good old-fashioned action, cool animation, reliable voice acting and a template for any live-action Justice League film to follow. Highly recommended to geeks everywhere.” It’s Latin for Cookies. Full Review
My favourite scene would be this scene of dialogue, if I had the clip it would be here but the quotes will have to do. I transcript it so it maybe off a word or two.
Green Lantern: “Fire is no problem for me, like I was saying Green Lanterns can do anything.”
Batman: “Except shut up apparently.”
Green Lantern: “Wow someone forgot to take their…true blood tonight”
Batman: “I am not a vampire.”
Green Lantern: “Really? I thought with the dark and the vanishing. Then, then what super strength?”
Green Lantern: “Can you fly?”
Batman: “In a Plane”
Green Lantern: “Wait you’re not just some guy in a bat costume are ya?”
Then Bat smirks HAHA loved that whole scene.
