Guardians of the Galaxy (Trailer #1) Review

Well that’s certainly something, not sure what exactly but yeah. Overall I am liking the look and feel of the characters and this world they’ve built, seems like a well-established set of worlds. I do have a problem with the structure of this trailer, the first half is a minute and a bit of character establishment which I get but really meant the content was just a teaser trailer, slightly disappointed on that front, hoping for more story structure in the next trailer. Another opinion is that past the people who are already on board for this film (me and the nerd minority) I don’t see many people being won over by this trailer; think they needed a stronger sell. I do however love that music at the end. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.

“Oh am sorry. I, I didn’t know how this machine worked” You’ll get it.

My Score: B

Release date: 1st August 2014

In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket, Drax the Destroyer and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

What I liked

#8. Nova Corps

The Nova Corps are an intergalactic military/police force in the marvel universe and if you see any one wearing that uniform then that’s what they are. Interestingly I seem to remember them all dying in the comics, not my area of the comics to be fair so I’d take that with a grain of salt. On the other hand I really like these two as comedic law enforcement to these insane intergalactic characters.

#7. Groot and Rocket

HAHA this will be fun, if nothing else fun. What we have here is a genetically altered racoon who likes setting fires and shooting large guns, and a humanoid tree alien that in the comics could only say his name, that may change in the film but let’s see what happens.

#6. Drax the Destroyer

This mad man will be interesting to watch, and if you want a connection to Thanos he’s got a real problem with him. Thanos actually killed his family and so Drax is out for revenge. He has super strength and incredible durability, not sure how the film will change him but we’ll see.

#5. Ship

The ship Star-Lord uses is simply called Ship, past that I am pretty sure it will be different. Looks cool mind you and Chris Pratt will work as a pilot. Really hope there will be some kick ass space battles.

#4. In His Contract

Why is he so red? Looks like he ran a marathon and then jumped into a sauna. But wow having known his work on Parks and Rec, this is a really impressive transformation. The picture is purely for ladies though, your welcome.

#3. Drax vs. Ronan

So close to missing this split second scene which is really interesting. First of all that is Drax being picked up, not many can do that and then I spotted the hammer so really it could only be Ronan. Ronan is Thanos’s right hand man and is a really powerful character. No idea how Lee Pace is going to play it but I am interested to see.

#2. The Guardians of the Galaxy

One of my favourite parts is this shot and the music is so damn weird, absolutely love it. “IIIIII am hooked on a feeling. Am high on believing. That you’re in love with me, am hooked on a feeling.” James Gunn had a hand in this trailer.

#1. Star-Lord

This image alone wins me over to this character. The flipping the bird, the attitude, his totally laid back attitude to authority, love it all. And if you look at that criminal record next to him you will see this gem ‘1 count of sex crime: “Illegal Manipulation of Gramosian Duchess”.’ HAHA I want to see that in the Blue Ray extras.

What I Didn’t Like

  • The trailer could have had more structure.
  • Less quick choppy scenes randomly placed together.
  • Next trailer I would like to see a brief idea of the plot.

New Poster

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?

Surely u can’t go wrong w a gun-totin’ raccoon, come on! “Hooked On A Feeling” by Blue Swede also appeared on th Reservoir Dogs OST. Good post, cheers!

  2. Victor De Leon says :

Not sure why I’m not that excited for this movie. But the trailer looks rad. Good post, Tim!

  3. Lights Camera Reaction says :

That Groot and Rocket scene looks EPIC! I am so pumped for this film. If Hollywood has taught
us anything, it’s that the deeper the space, the more danger you face. Guardians of the Galaxy could be the film of the summer.

  4. atothewr says :

I honestly know nothing about this comic, but that trailer did sell me. Was on board the first time I watched it. Just looks so quirky. Can’t pass it up. Nice review.

  5. boxofficebuzzab says :

Ha ha, I did appreciate the pic in #4. In His Contract. Thanks for thinking of your female readers. 😀 🙂 Overall, I wanted more from the trailer but I’m really excited for this movie and I’m liking the characters. I hope they are able to win over mainstream audiences because I think this could be a fun new franchise.

  6. Amonymous says :

Love this trailer. Can’t wait to see more!
FYI, the 2014 Summer Blockbuster AMONtage will be online next month. 😉

Your #1 Like is also my #1 Like haha.

  9. caragale says :

Nice breakdown, per usual. Sounds like we’re on the same page for this trailer. And thanks for that Pratt pic. I know this lady appreciated it. 😉 P.S. I have nominated you for a Sunshine Award!

  10. mikeyb @ screenkicker says :

I think it looks great. Plus Pratt seems to be playing his character from The Lego Movie. Plus Peter Serafinowitz is in it. What’s not to like!

  11. williamjepma says :

I have no idea if this movie will be good. It could bomb, and Marvel knows it. They’re taking a huge risk that could easily backfire. And yet I cannot wait to see it. Something about this trailer reminded me of the sci-fi I loved as a kid, and I’m almost completely sold. It will be interesting seeing more of it in the coming months. 🙂

  12. Dan says :

I did like the humor in the trailer but it does seem to center around one particular sequence in the film which probably lasts about 15 minutes at most. If the rest of the film turns into a generic computer game action-fest we might all be siding on the bad with this one. But I’m optimistic.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

      You don’t optimistic haha xD

This is a wierd trailer and I am not sure it will work to get audiences but I am looking to the next one for some plot direction. Still, what would stop us from watching this?

      • Dan says :

Absolutely! There’s nothing going to stop the legion of Marvel fans flocking to this one. Right now, it is the most interesting upcoming Marvel film aside from Avengers 2 but I think it is best to be guarded as to our expectations otherwise it’ll fail to live up to them.

…it’ll be interesting to see what the next trailer throws up.

  13. Redhead at the Movies says :

I agree with a lot of your points about the trailer’s structure but overall, I really liked the zany, fun quality and tone of it and I think more even structure maybe wouldn’t have achieved that, so hopefully future trailers will have some slightly different goals so when all taken together, we get excited for the movie even if based on a lot of trailers separately and not just one trailer that achieves everything at once. I have been really excited for this movie precisely because of how silly and campy it seems to be so a trailer that supports that for me makes me feel like I’ll be getting precisely what I expected and wanted to from the movie itself. Also, I really like the way you broke this analysis down! Definitely an inspiration for when I write more of my own posts about trailers.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Glad we agree. Looks very good and regardless of any promotional material I am going to see this 😀

Different trailers have different themes so am sure everyone will get what they want eventually.

Also, Inspirational? Wow thanks haha that’s a rare compliment for me 😀

  14. The Celtic Predator says :

So is this supposed to be a comedy-action Marvel movie? I keep getting the feeling that we’re not supposed to be taking this movie too seriously already.

  15. Hypersonic55 says :

Hey man great write-up, it seems like you and I are on similar wavelengths about this trailer, that the trailer was good, but not nearly as perfect as some are making it out to be. For me I thought it started out pretty well and then by the end I was left feeling excited and a bit confused. I literally thought that this was the most random trailer I have ever seen. I really love Chris Pratt in this trailer, he is so funny and laid back, that flipping of the bird was the best thing ever. Also that run-down of the team by John C. Riley’s character in their individual scenes was great because of their reactions. The look and tone of the film is awesome too, love the sic-fi setting, action and humour too.

Dunno if you saw my review for this trailer, but I suggest you have a look for my expanded thoughts.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Thanks man and don’t worry I get new posts through email. I don’t miss a beat haha 😀

Definitely a random one. Needed more structure which I hope they can do in the next trailer. My view is that they don’t need to win us over, we’re going to see it regardless. But the general public will be a bit harder to convince of this one 😀

      Favourite part?

      • Hypersonic55 says :

Your speed is always impressive. 🙂

I assume with the next trailer we’ll see more structure and probably more characters who haven’t been revealed yet. And yeah I know that a lot of Marvel’s devoted fanbase will flock to this film in the summer.

As for my favourite part… Hmmmm? It would be a tie between the intro sceen with Star-Lord announcing who he was with none of them knowing who he was or that bit when he flipped the bird. Oh or maybe that tiny clip of Groot and Rocket causing chaos in the prison! 😀

  16. jjames36 says :

My favorite part about this trailer is that it tells me absolutely nothing about the plot. It helps set the tone of Guardians (frivolous, fun) without spoiling the story. I love that, and hope it continues.

    Otherwise, we completely agree.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Oh yeah I get that. Hate spoilers and often like that I don’t know what am walking into except a brief synopsis. I am mainly reviewing from a general publics point of view, this has to win them over and I am not sure it will. Still, we like it so far 😀

  17. ruth says :

Didn’t care for the trailer, but then again I was always meh about this whole project. I think I prefer the LEGO version of Chris Pratt, ahah.

  18. Mr Rumsey says :

I really didn’t know what to make of this one… but then I’m not at all clued into comic books!

  19. Gene says :

Hmmmm… very weird trailer. I guess I understand the “character setup” for the first half. This isn’t exactly a household comic so you need to pull some people in that aren’t already on board. I suppose that character establishment, along with the one-liners from Star-Lord, accomplish that to some extent. I am slightly disappointed in it. BUT, we’ve got a long way to go and probably 2-3 more trailers.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

I think they should have gone a bit more story oriented with the first trailer and a character trailer after. Not sure if it’s wise to give a confusing trailer first into the publics minds. First impressions and all that. Am sure it will work out. I am just thinking of the general public and what there preconceptions will be because I really want this to work 😀
