The Maze Runner (Trailer #1) Review
This to my great surprise looks really good! I remember some vague talk of this film but this looks really good, I won’t to see it now. As an example of my high opinion I bumped my already late ‘Lego Movie review’ to my Friday slot because I wanted this review out as close to its trailer release as possible. It feels an awful lot like Attack on Titan plus lord of the flies, and wow that is one nutty combo and I like it. The cloths, the walls, the colour scheme, they all link back to a live action version of Attack on Titan, the more I watch it the more I see it. As for lord of the flies it’s pretty obvious, the group of boys (teens), their rituals and the isolation from society. It’s a male oriented tween film as well which is something new to try out on the big screen. The film also boasts a fantastic group of young actors, all very talented which is nice to see and quite rare in these ‘tween’ films. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.
“Who put us here? What’s out there?”
My Score: B+
Release date: 19th September 2014
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, young Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they’re all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow “runners” for a shot at escape.
What I liked
I am not Claustrophobic but I do get effected when watching stuff like this, start to get tense, take a breath. Quite like that effect and this looks to have a few of them to play with. Remember The Descent? Never going into a cave again.
#5. Single Lady (Literally One)
1 girl 50 guys, hmm. Don’t get this whole thing, not sure why there are only boys, not sure why that has changed now, but we’ll find when we watch the film. Kaya Scodelario is also a very good actress, whilst I don’t care all that much for Skins, she was good in that show so hope she does well.
Where did they get that cow skull from? Are there cows in there? Burning an effigy is always pretty powerful imagery so am guessing it builds a lot of the culture the boys have created from no memory and complete isolation.
#3. The Menace?
Some sort of robot scorpion from what we get to see in the trailer. Looks pretty neat and we don’t see it all so we still have some suspense, still don’t think it matters too much in this film.
#2. That’s Cheating!
First thing that came to mind watching this is how can they not get out if they have a map? However I am assuming this is built by them from past attempts or something they discover in the maze designed to trick them. Could be anything but that is a cool prop.
#1. Who Dares to Enter?
Boy does those walls look ominous. Also the angle of that shot is great and makes the walls look bigger and the boys smaller in comparison. I just really hope this film is good and please kill characters off and make it bloody, or not as its PG. Make a uncut version for me.
What I Didn’t Like
- Not liking the vague sense of chosen one’s going on. The whole why are ‘we’ different bit gives me doubt in an otherwise very promising film trailer. If anyone has read the books and wants to give me a spoiler free explanation for this I welcome it in the comments.
Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?
