47 Ronin (2013) Review

I heard awful things about this film and so didn’t go to cinema to see it, but after seeing it recently I kind of regret that. The film isn’t great by any stretch of the imagination but it isn’t bad and I had quite a bit of fun watching it. In saying that I would like to point out that I am weird and I imagine the number of people who would also like this film to be quite small, so my readers are warned. The story and general script wasn’t too bad but if I were to give some advice it would be to not use as much of the magical and fantasy elements because it costs far too much and was the worst parts of the film. The battles and action was pretty great and had fun with all the samurai action, less so when they fought magic stuff. The visuals where strong and whilst I think the film could have done without the magic elements they didn’t skimp on the CGI. This cost way too much to make. I’ll go into much more detail below and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

300: Rise of an Empire (2014) Review

Most people who know me and have read my reviews would guess I liked 300 quite a bit and you would be right, so obviously I was going to see Rise of an Empire. Sadly and not unexpectedly this was a weaker contender than its star studded predecessor but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. The acting was passable if only dragged along by its two leads, seriously cannot remember anyone past Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green who were both pretty good. The story and general script was pretty bad and somehow seemed smaller in scale than 300, which seems impossible considering how much more happened in this film. The battles and action was pretty great and as where the visuals short of some effects I would not have used in this film. The visuals where strong and the music wasn’t bad either. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

RoboCop (2014) Review

The reboot of RoboCop is not bad, it’s actually pretty good. And nobody is more surprised than me. The acting was good, the characters are interesting, the dialogue was for the most part good, and Samuel L. Jackson had me in stitches. The science fiction is interesting, focusing on a very topical plot point of the use of Drones; I thought the idea of the near future predicted here isn’t all too insane. The new and old takes from the first film work, like the Omnicorp having a marketing guy keeping polls on social media, Jay Baruchel was a good choice for that role. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

RoboCop (1987) Review

To mark the release of the reboot here is the RoboCop original review. RoboCop is more than just a science fiction film about a cyborg cop, it’s a terrifying look at a future owned by corporations and it’s soaked in political satire like all of the best Verhoeven films. The acting whilst not Oscar worthy is still pretty good which can be hard to do in a film like this. The characters are creative and unique and I am not just talking about the cyborg even the bad guys are so entertaining thanks to Ronny Cox and Kurtwood Smith. The films dialogue is so fun and simple that it can be quoted with ease. The science fiction is fascinating and ponders some interesting questions about the future, but we also get some wonderful crime thriller with drug dealers and corrupted businessmen for RoboCop to take down in his own kick ass style.

Ender’s Game (2013) Review

Damn trailers, made me think this was rubbish and missed it in theatres. From the trailers I thought this was going to be some action film with tweens (barf) but it was much closer to what I heard of the book, psychological with lots of links to child armies and how wars can be justified from different viewpoints. The acting was good, the visuals where good. The characters are very interesting, and considering the age of the cast it’s rather impressive. If you are a fan of the book (never read it) or an avid history buff then watching this will be interesting, it’s also a very good view of war in general. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

“After you had already won, why did you continue to hit him? Did you enjoy it?”

“Knocking him down was the first fight, I wanted to win all the others. So they’d leave me alone.” My favourite quote is in the spoiler section.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (2013) Review

Yes! I got to see a big film at its premier night and it was great! Few Hobbits, Couple Dwarfs and a DRAGON! Smaug you scene stealing marvel. What more could you want? And in case you were wondering, yes the sequel is better than the first film. It had better flow, more action and you know stuff actually happened most of the time. It’s essential what you get when adapting the events of the book rather than the journey featured in the fist film. The characters are very interesting, got to know more of the dwarfs and a whole bunch of new characters that will feature in the last film, such as Bard The Bowman and Thranduil (Elf King). Out of everything featured in this film I must say that the visuals effects are by far the most stand out improvement over the first film. Smaug was a sight to see and worth the price of submission. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) Review

Nearly didn’t see this film but luckily for you readers I did and do not regret it at all. A really good, entertaining film, November and December are looking like a great couple of cinema months. The first Hunger Games wasn’t all that great, it had potential and I did like some of it but it did miss the mark a bit. This film does wonders seeing its potential and going for it, changing directors seem to work for sequels this year. It’s a more thrilling story, it’s a well-paced and smartly presented film and if you are a fan apparently it’s more loyal to the book. It’s just winning on all fronts, or it’s as good as Caesars teeth are white. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

Escape Plan (2013) Review

I actually liked this film and believe me I was not expecting to enjoy this.  Still have a bad taste from Bullet to the Head (awful!) and to a lesser extent The Last Stand. But I genuinely enjoyed watching this film and had a lot of fun. Haven’t laughed at Arnies one liners for a while and I really miss it, he has some hysterical ones in this. The only down side to this film is how sad that it never got made in the 80’s or 90’s when the two were in their prime but still this was pretty good regardless. There are a lot of weird things in this film that I will mention later but nothing too bad and it doesn’t interfere with the main story. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

“You hit like a vegetarian” Nearly my favourite quote of the film but not quite, not going to write my favourite haha “Helmet”.

Machete Kills (2013) Review

The first film was in that category of its cheesy and totally grindhouse mad and whilst both of those apply to this there is also a lot WHAT?!  Going on that makes this more of an “it’s so bad its good” category which is fine as well if you are in the mood for it. I still had a really good laugh watching it and if you have friends who don’t mind the first film then you will have a ball! This is going to be a short review because the only way I can really describe this film is how I’d say never to make a film. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

Machete Kills (Red Band Trailer #2) Review

Now that’s more like it. I didn’t like the first one because it was a bit dull and boring. But with this you get action, laughs, terrible CGI and lots of sexy ladies. I think with a film like this you need a good red band because otherwise you are restraining 90% of the film from the trailer. This reminds me a lot more of the grindhouse trailer for the first one, even the voice over guy. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer.
